For day 3 of summer get city we came to Michigan State to do some investigating of how the food we eat is made. For the beginning of the day we went to Shaw Hall to get a tour of the kitchen and how they prep the food they make. For example they have to organize the recipes 4 weeks in advance. After we ate at Shaw Hall we came over to the engineering building. First we went to Dr. Scott’s lab to see how things look under the AFM microscope. We say things that we 1/1000 the size of a strand of hair! Then we learned about liquid nitrogen and how we can make ice cream out of it. Also we got asked if we knew how cold water can get and if we knew how cold liquid nitrogen can get. I was surprised to hear that some of the kids knew the answer to it. Liquid nitrogen is about -300F!! We are using the liquid nitrogen to help us make the ice cream. We are also using some half and half cream that’s from Ohio and we used some sugar that is also from Ohio. (That is another thing we were doing. Figuring out where our food comes from, how far it has to travel and how that affects the environment).
