Learning to see and give witness to communities
Core practice
Engaging students in learning about their communities, alongside the members of the community, as engaged participants.
Guiding Principle
Community is especially important given the history and politics of cultural differences and inequality in urban schools serving low-income students of color.
What does it look like in practice?
The STEM unit focuses on engineering for sustainable communities. During the preparation process, the teachers will give opportunities for soliciting and integrating the knowledge and experiences of members of various communities—including classroom, school, and local and familial communities and integrate through the entire design challenge.
- Asking students to explore why including other people’s perspectives matters in engineering.
- Asking students to brainstorm which different community stakeholders should be included in the engineering process, discussing engineering projects in their community, and wondering why community voices matter to their projects.
