GET City youth presented their socially just businesses today at the LEAP event in Lansing for area entrepreneurs. All five teams represented extraordinarily well. Their work is what makes a difference in this world. As one of the youth, Z stated, “It’s not about making money. It’s about doing what is right. Doing what is good. We want to help people. We think when others learn about our projects they will also be able to help people, too.” Z’s comments capture the social justice business approach shared by the youth. Groups included:
GET City 4 Real You Tube Station: A for us by us you tube channel that teachers others how to make with green energy.
The Green Greenhouse: A solar powered greenhouse to produce healthy snacks for the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing.
The Little Free STEM Library: A library of STEM books and mini maker kits helping all kids in their community (especially in the library desert part of town) have access to books and materials.
The Donator: A smart phone app with information about homelessness, how to help the homeless, and where/how to donate.
The Dog Designer Rescue Kit for stray dogs in case you come across one while you’re walking down the street or while your family is driving on the roads. The rescue kit is stylish and functional! It will help us help animals.
Today I went to the ‘5 minutes tops’ to present the little free library that stephen and i made. I told everyone about why we are making them and who we are making it for. Too bad Stephen couldnt make it to the event but i hope he feels better. This event is for teens who are trying to make there buisness go further in the future. Also this was a good experience to talk about why we are trying to do the library. Even though i was really nervous and i was shaking while presenting. We ended up winning a small grant to help with our little free stem library. ~ Autumn
On Tuesday, Stephen and I worked on our 5 minute slide show that we are presenting on march 22nd 2017. In our presentation we talk about the little free stem library that we are making and what it is for and how we are planning on doing with it. For example, we used Google Maps to determine where all of the libraries are in Lansing and when they are open. We figured out we live in a library desert. We really need to provide this service to our community. It should not cost them any money. Everyone deserves to learn how to read.
Also when we practiced our talk on Tuesday, we did it under 5 minutes. I’m glad that me and stephen are making the little free library because its helping kids around Lansing and around the world and I’m hoping that other people tell kids that don’t have a way to the public library about the free library. Also me and sthephen are having lots of fun making the library and we are having fun coming up with new ideas to put in the library and how we are gonna put them in other places other than the boys and girls club. i hope you enjoyed the blog post -autumn
Today we all went to the Lansing center for the LEAP event to show our projects! Stephen and I showed our library. We all did amazing! I just wanna say congrats to the group that won! The group that made the Timmy won first place for tech! The Timmy is a heated light up shoe to keep people warm and healthy in the winter. It is going to be for free or really low cost so that everyone can have one. I had lots of fun. My group got alot of good comments about our little free library. It was the hardest I ever worked. The library will help the kids read and also make things! I will report on the rest of the groups next!
The top of our kit!
Today on the second day of Spring, Stephen and I both worked on the little free library…again!. Stephen started to work on the door for it and I worked on little box kits for kids to make paper circuits. So you guessed it – that is our surprise. We want to have kits not just books so kids can do things at home even if they do not have the supplies at home! We want kids to be able to do what we have done. When me and Stephen got the Plexiglass we noticed that there was a crack in it from when Day cut it for us! But when Stephen made a hole through it it didn’t crack! I guess we are just better with the power tools! But, thanks to Day for cutting itfor us! And thanks to Scott for helping Stephen put the door together! It’s gonna look amazing after the door is put on the shelf! I will update you all on the other groups tomorrow! We have to finish the lights and stuff. We have to get our projects done because we are presenting on Thursday!
The door was NOT easy!
Isn’t this door amazing!
Today in Get City, Stephen and I worked on our lil free library a lil bit more. We put a back on it to make it not wobble as much as it did, and we are now working on making a door for it. So far it is looking good and we did a lot of hard work in it. We are also making a sign for it next week.
At the table next to us, Kiana and Bee worked on the light up back pack project. They are trying to power the LED lights with piezo electric generators. They have been having a hard time getting it to work. But, today, they soldered 6 of the piezos together with 1 LED light, and Bee, Kiana, Stephen and I all pressed on the piezos to get the light to light up. Guess what? We finally got it to work!!!!
This picture shows Kiana and Bee working on the piezo testing and me and Stephen working in the background.
Today in get city everyone was working on their projects and me and Angie did a power point for the little free library that we are gonna make for the kids/teens at the boys and girls club. We already know how we are gonna make it, and its gonna be amazing! Its gonna be an amazing way for kids to get reading down for school! Here are some highlights:
Who is the library for?
- It is for the kids (all ages) at the Boys and girls club.
- They should be able to use it any time of the day, except for when the club is closed.
- Its not for parents, but parents can use it if there kid cant be there, they can come and get a book for them.
Today, everyone is working on their projects. Like, for example, Stephen and I are working on a Little Free Library. We’re going to make it for the Boys and Girls Club so that kids don’t have to go to the Public Library to get a book, they can just get one from the little library at the BGC . I hope we get to make it how we want it!
Little free library in Chicago that one of our mentors saw
Today me and Stephen were looking up pictures of little free libraries to get some ideas about how we want to make ours. We are excited about being able to share STEM books with everyone! There were some pretty cool ones and we got a really good idea from one of them. I hope we get to make it because it would be really cool to make one. We drew out our ideas and now we will are going to build it! Also everyone else that is in GET City is working on their inventions.
